BESA: The Promise weaves Albania’s heroism in WWII through the journeys of two men: the efforts of photographer Norman Gershman to document first-person accounts of Albanian Muslims who rescued Jews during the Holocaust and Muslim-Albanian Rexhep Hoxha’s efforts to carry out the promise to return Hebrew books to a Jewish family his father rescued. Rexhep’s besa is an honor code that pledges all Albanians to offer safe harbor to refugees. Through this we discover a nation of everyday heroes. Through Jewish survivors, we hear stories of gratitude to rescuers that have gone unheard for almost 70 years. Discussion will follow. Free with Museum admission.
